Note: I did not rank this list sequentially. In other words, the first may not be a better GMAT course than the seventh.

This is because I believe that all students have their own learning preferences. Thus, I hope you will read through every course on the list and select the one that suits your learning style.

Issues related to the GMAT Course

The most problematic issue that most students face when buying the GMAT prep course is a Better Score Guarantee.

I believe most readers are already familiar with it. This guarantee ensures that you will score higher on the GMAT exam. Otherwise, the course provider might give you a full refund or an extension of course access until you manage to score higher.

That seems straightforward. However, in reality, it is not.

You cannot just ask for a refund after failing to score higher. You will have to fulfill all prior conditions. Otherwise, you are not eligible to use the warranty.

Almost no course provider provides this information on their sales page. Thus, most students who don’t bother reading the terms of service will never know.

They end up getting frustrated when they know they cannot receive their money back. Consequently, many go to the review sites and give the course provider one-star reviews.

Based on my experience, fulfilling the conditions is always challenging. You have to complete almost all lessons, assignments, and tests in the course, which could take hundreds of hours. Some even require you to take the official GMAT test before enrolling in the prep program.

Thus, I suggest taking the guarantee with a grain of salt. You should just use all learning resources as you need and stick to the goal of scoring higher on the GMAT, which is far more significant than fulfilling all conditions of the guarantee.

1. The Princeton Review GMAT

The Princeton Review is a prominent provider that offers prep courses for various tests, such as SAT, TOEFL, GRE, CFA, GMAT, etc.

Regarding the GMAT test, The Princeton Review offers four types of prep programs as follows.

GMAT 700+

GMAT 700+ is the flagship GMAT prep program from The Princeton Review. The program name comes from a guarantee that your score will be at least 700 on the GMAT test or increase by more than 80 points.

Below are all the course materials you will receive from the GMAT700+ Program.

47-hour Live Instructions – You will learn live online with The Princeton Review’s GMAT instructors through the online class platform.

The max class size is only 12, which is small enough for students to ask questions and communicate effectively in real-time with their instructors and classmates.

The total length of all online classes is 47 hours, 27 of which are dedicated to core GMAT instructions that will explain core concepts of each part and general tips & tricks for you to score well on the GMAT exam.

Another 10+ hours will be spent on methods and strategies to tackle the most advanced questions on the GMAT, while the last 10+ hours will be online sessions where the instructors will explain the solution to practice drills and tests in detail.

Adaptive Drills and Practice Tests– The GMAT exam uses an adaptive system that will send out more difficult questions to test-takers if they answer former questions correctly. This system has intimidated countless many students.

Thus, The Princeton Review has designed adaptive drills that will provide a similar experience. Upon completing these drills, you will be familiar with the system, and nothing can stop you from scoring well on the GMAT.

Currently, there are 2570+ questions and ten other practice tests that use an adaptive system (4400+ practice questions in total). These are more than adequate for effective preparation. I don’t think you will need extra courses or books for the GMAT exam anymore.

Live Sessions – All students can access additional live sessions that explain various topics and are open for students to ask questions. You might think of them as online office hours in a university.

Hint and On-demand Video Lessons – You can ask for a textual hint if you get stuck on any specific practice question. Alternatively, you can watch detailed video explanations that the instructor prerecorded.

Drillbuilder – The Princeton Review provides a smart Drillbuilder that creates drills for students to practice specific skills easily.

You can order an Algorithm to automatically create one for you or manually customize and create one on your own.

With this massive amount of resources, you are fully equipped with one of the best learning resources available for the GMAT exam. I am sure that if you complete most of them, you will be confident, anxiety-free, and score much higher on the GMAT.

The tuition for this program is $1899. However, The Princeton Review frequently offers a $300 discount on their platform. Therefore, you can get it for as low as $1599.

GMAT Fundamentals

GMAT Fundamentals is essentially similar to GMAT 700+. The only difference is that you will get only 27 hours of live instructions, and the guarantee only ensures that you will score higher (compared to at least an 80+ point increase for the GMAT 700+).

The tuition for this program is $1399. Nonetheless, The Princeton Review usually offers a $100 discount on this program. Thus, you can buy it for $1299.

I consider the GMAT 700+ a much better deal. At $300, you will get an additional 20 hours of premium live instructions to tackle the most challenging questions on the test, and it costs only $15 per hour.

Furthermore, you will also get an upgraded guarantee that is decent but much more useful once you fulfill all conditions.

However, suppose you already know what you are doing and don’t think you need extra classes. You can choose the GMAT Fundamentals Program and enjoy a lower rate.

Self-Paced

The self-paced course is the most inexpensive option The Princeton Review offers for the GMAT test.

The learning resources you will get from this course are similar to the GMAT Fundamentals program, except that all the lessons will be prerecorded, so you cannot interact with your instructors.

Since the entire program is 100% self-paced online, you can learn anywhere, anytime.

Compared to the other two live, online programs above, the self-paced counterpart is much cheaper. The tuition is $799, or $699 after discounts.

In my opinion, this program is best for students who live outside the US and cannot comfortably join the class in the US timezone. Still, US students with a busy schedule might also find this option worth considering as well.

Private Tutoring

Private Tutoring is the costliest GMAT prep course that The Princeton Review offers.

Instead of joining group sessions, you will learn live online from a private tutor who will create a personalized prep plan based on your strengths and weaknesses.

The tuition for this program is $3000 for 18 hours or $1800 for 10 hours ($167 to $180 per hour). In addition to private tutoring, you will also get a self-paced program worth $699.

Important Note: You will not receive a guarantee unless you choose the 18-hour option. Thus, the 18-hour option is the one that you would want to buy.

Compared to all other alternatives, The Princeton Review’s private tutoring is costly. This option is thus only suitable for students who want tailor-made tutoring or have suffered from scoring low on the GMAT despite many attempts.

Otherwise, I don’t think most students would find private tutoring necessary.

2. Prep Scholar GMAT

Prep Scholar is another provider that offers excellent test prep courses for the GMAT. Compared to The Princeton Review, Prep Scholar emphasizes much more on the self-guided online program.

If you are looking for a reliable GMAT prep course that you can learn anywhere, anytime, Prep Scholar’s should be on the radar.

Completely Customized Online GMAT Prep

The self-paced course is Prep Scholar’s flagship GMAT program. Below are the learning resources you will get from the course.

Diagnostic Assessment and Customized Curriculum– Before proceeding to the course, you will need to take a short test so that the algorithm can determine your skill level.

Unlike other platforms, diagnostic results are essential as Prep Scholar will use them as a reference to create a personalized curriculum. Thus, you should try to score as high as possible because your study program will best cater to your current skills.

Interactive GMAT Lessons – All Prep Scholar GMAT lessons are interactive. You will learn the concepts through numerous assignments and get better over time. The system itself is also adaptive. Thus, it will give new assignments and lessons based on your performance.

Strategy Lessons – Some students did not score well on the GMAT because they lacked a reliable strategy. Hence, these lessons can come to the rescue. Prep Scholar’s instructors will provide insights into their strategies to score high on the GMAT in these lessons.

Video Explanations – Although Prep Scholar’s approach focuses less on video lessons, the platform also has some video explanations for the most challenging concepts and assignments.

Adaptive Practice Tests – Prep Scholar provides as many as four adaptive practice exams to help you prepare for the upcoming GMAT exam. In total, the course has as many as 1200 GMAT practice questions.

Progress Tracker – The learning platform has several progress trackers that you can use to evaluate your performance over time, including weekly reports and skill progress charts.

The tuition for this program is $259 for 4-month access, which is more affordable than most other GMAT study courses. It also comes with a 60-point improvement guarantee, which is unarguably one of the highest point improvement guarantees for a self-guided GMAT program.

Compared to The Princeton Review’s self-paced program, Prep Scholar’s has much fewer features. However, it is more than 50% cheaper. I believe you should give it a try.

You can start a trial to try the program without charges for five days.

Note: Prep Scholar also offers a cheaper program ($139) with even fewer features and shorter access time.

Despite its affordability, I don’t think this course’s resources are sufficient to improve your score. It would be best if you adhered to the comprehensive program above.

GMAT Tutoring

This option from Prep Scholar is similar to other programs’ private tutoring. Your tutor, a GMAT 99% top scorer, will work with you to improve your GMAT score.

The learning plan is 100% personalized. Your tutor will craft one that fits your skills and preferences. Also, true to any 1-on-1 tutoring program, you are free to ask questions at any time and tell your tutor what you want to learn.

Currently, Prep Scholar has three packages for 1-on-1 tutoring. You can select between 4,10, and 20 hours of tutoring. All packages grant access to the Completely Customized Online GMAT Prep.

Unlike its self-paced program, GMAT tutoring from Prep Scholar is as expensive as The Princeton Review’s, as it starts at $170 per hour. However, the resources it provides are far less than The Princeton Review.

Therefore, if you are considering 1-on-1 tutoring, I think The Princeton Review is a better choice.

3. Target Test Prep

Target Test Prep is an online platform dedicated to providing GMAT training. Initially, it even offered only GMAT Quant training. However, the platform expands to include the verbal section as well.

GMAT Prep Course

Like Prep Scholar, Target Test Prep mainly offers a self-paced program for the GMAT test. Hence, you can set your own schedule (assisted by the smart system) and learn anywhere, anytime.

Below are the learning resources you will get from the course.

Interactive Learning – The program is packed with realistic examples and well-written explanations, further improving your understanding of concepts.

You will first read the concepts and later complete the interactive exercises.

Personalized Study Plan – Target Test Prep has a feature that helps students create a personalized plan and maintain their study efforts. Thus, you can be confident that you will be well-prepared for the GMAT exam.

Practice GMAT Questions and Tests– Target Test Prep currently provides more than 2500 quant questions and 950 verbal questions for students to practice.

Nevertheless, the big drawback of this feature is that, unlike its competitors, these questions are not adaptive. Thus, they cannot simulate the real exam environment well enough.

Intelligent Analytics – Target Test Prep collects your performance data and generates actionable insights for all students to perceive their strengths and weaknesses and make smart decisions.

Error Tracker – This feature allows you to analyze your errors handily. You will understand why you answered incorrectly. Hence, you will learn from your mistakes and become a better test-taker.

In addition to these features, what makes Target Test Prep shine is its learning platform. It is easy to use, intuitive, fast, and excellent in promoting interactive learning. You can learn comfortably on any device.

Regarding pricing, there are two options that you can choose from as follows:

• Flexible – $229 per month
• Dedicated Study – $649 for four months

The most popular plan is the Flexible plan, since it offers flexibility to opt out at anytime. However, based on my experience, to excel in any exam, you will need at least 3 months or more if you are an international student. I highly suggest subscribing to the Dedicated Study or Maximum Learning plans.

If you are still unsure whether Target Test Prep fits your learning style, you can pay $1 to try the entire program for five days.

GMAT Tutoring

Like other GMAT test prep providers, Target Test Prep also offers GMAT 1-on-1 tutoring. At $300 per hour, the pricing is prohibitive. I think it would be better if you consider other alternatives.

4. Magoosh

Like The Princeton Review and Kaplan, Magoosh provides a wide range of test prep courses, including TOEFL, SAT, GRE, and GMAT, but at much more affordable pricing.

Therefore, if you are looking for affordable GMAT preparation courses, Magoosh would be one of the best options available.

Magoosh GMAT

Magoosh GMAT program is 100% self-paced online. Thus, you can freely set your study schedules. Furthermore, with an excellent mobile app on iOS and Android, you can learn or practice anywhere and anytime with ease.

Below are the learning resources that Magoosh provides in the program.

Video Lessons – You learn GMAT skills and beneficial techniques from more than 340 expert-made video lessons.

Practice Questions and Tests– The program has more than 1300 practice questions and two full-length diagnostic tests. All of which come with an adaptive system that you can turn on and off at will.

The great thing is that Magoosh offers a video explaining the solution for each question, which is extremely beneficial if you keep getting stuck in some types of GMAT questions.

Score Predictor – Magoosh’s innovative system will predict your GMAT score based on your data. This could indicate whether you are ready for your exam.

The pricing for this course for this prep course is $249. You can also pay $799 (or $550 extra) to add Magoosh’s 6 hours of 1-on-1 tutoring to your program.

All plans come with two types of guarantees. The first one is a 7-day money-back guarantee. Magoosh will refund all course fees within seven days of purchase, while the second is a 50-point improvement guarantee similar to those offered by other GMAT prep courses.

5. The Economist GMAT Tutor

The Economist GMAT Tutor is a GMAT prep program created by The Economist, one of the most influential business and economics publications.

Compared to other providers, the Economist probably utilizes one of the most advanced technologies. The platform uses machine learning to generate insights into your learning habits and develop the most effective strategy to improve your GMAT score.

GMAT Tutor

The format for this course is unique. It is a mixture of online self-paced and expert-guided online tutoring. Below is what is included in the course.

Video Lessons – The Economist provides highly detailed video lessons covering all GMAT concepts, tips & techniques, and many more.

Adaptive Learning Platform – This learning platform is AI-powered. Based on your performance data, AI will tailor practice questions and strategies that can make the most impact on your score. Hence, your study plan will be fully optimized and perfectly cater to your needs.

Practice Tests – The Economist offers four full-length practice tests that you can leverage to practice and sharpen your skills (You can add two more by spending your credits, see below)

Credit System – The Economist GMAT tutor is the most flexible GMAT test prep because of the credit system. If you have used up your learning resources (i.e., essay reviews), you can spend your available credits to get more.

Economist Digital Subscription – All plans include a 3-month digital subscription to the Economist, one of the most-read business magazines.

Pricing

The Economist currently has three pricing plans for the GMAT Tutor as follows:

• Essential – $449 for 4-month access, 50 point improvement guarantee, and 1375 credits
• Premium – $669 for 6- month access, 70 point improvement guarantee, and 1785 credits
• Genius – $989 for 6-month access, 70 point improvement guarantee, and 3315 credits

All plans provide access to all lessons and features. However, higher plans will give you more time to access, learning resource limits, and credits.

Regarding credits, one hundred of them cost $65, which is expensive as you need to spend 300 credits on one tutoring session, and up to 95 on one essay submission.

In other words, you will pay $195 per hour for the tutoring, which is costlier than The Princeton Review’s.

Suppose you seriously need expert-guided assistance. The Genius plan is the one you should subscribe to. As additional credits are expensive, it is thus best to select the plan that grants the most resources and credits from the start.

However, if you are much on your own, the Essential plan will be more than sufficient. You can use your leftover credits to get more practice tests or essay reviews.

6. Manhattan Prep

Manhattan Prep offers excellent graduate school admission test training, notably for the GMAT, GRE, and LSAT. Thus, the company is another popular prep course provider that you may want to consider.

Like the Princeton Review and Kaplan, Manhattan Prep offers various GMAT prep course options for test-takers.

GMAT Complete Course

GMAT Complete Course is a live online GMAT prep course from Manhattan Prep and the company’s flagship course.

Below are the learning resources you will get from the course.

Live Online Classes – All students will participate in 27-hour live online instructions, which will feature all concepts, tips, tricks, and techniques you need to know to score well on the GMAT exam. Each class is 3-hour long, and it spans over two months.

GMAT Interact – Students who enroll in this program can automatically access GMAT Interact, Manhattan Prep’s on-demand prep course (see below.)

This program will provide video lessons, practice tests, progress trackers, an interactive syllabus, and more to the GMAT Complete Course.

You can access the course up to 6 months after your live online classes end or approximately eight months in total after registration.

Regarding pricing, this course is $1599, in line with The Princeton Review’s. You can also add 3 hours of online tutoring for an extra $450.

GMAT Interact

As indicated above, GMAT Interact is an on-demand GMAT prep course from Manhattan Prep. Below is a summary of what you will get from the course.

On-demand Video Lessons and Workshops – This uses the same curriculum as the GMAT Complete Course. However, all the lessons are prerecorded so that you can learn anywhere, anytime.

The drawback is that you cannot communicate with your instructors, and the lessons might be less fresh.

Adaptive Practice Tests and Questions – Manhattan Prep provides as many as six complete practice tests for the GMAT. All of which are adaptive, optimally simulating the actual exam experience.

Furthermore, you can also practice by working on question banks. Thus, you will always have sufficient practice questions to prepare for the GMAT exam.

Assessment Reports and Analysis Tracker – Manhattan Prep will collect your performance data and create reports for students to perceive their weaknesses easily.

Comprehensive GMAT Guides and Supplemental Resources – You will also get six official prep books from Manhattan Prep, which will tackle all parts of the GMAT exam, Quant, Verbal, or Integrated Reasoning.

These books would add more practice questions, explanations, and many other learning resources.

This course costs $999, which makes it the most expensive self-paced GMAT preparation course available.

Although this course provides numerous course materials, I think it is unreasonable for it to be $300-$400 more expensive than self-guided courses of The Princeton Review and Kaplan that similarly offer the same amount of excellent resources.

Thus, subscribing to GMAT Complete Course is a better option, as it provides much more value for money.

Private Tutoring

Like other GMAT prep providers, Manhattan Prep grants an opportunity for students to be tutored privately by leading instructors. You can get personalized GMAT training based on your skills, learning style, and preference.

The pricing starts at $255 per hour. If you purchase more hours, you will receive a small discount. For example, a 10-hour package will cost $2450 or $245 per hour.

If you are interested in private tutoring, you should buy at least 10 hours, as Manhattan Prep will give you free access to the GMAT Interact program ($999 value.)

Advanced Course and Boot Camp

These two programs target students with unique preferences or requirements, such as aiming for a perfect GMAT score.

The first program, Advanced Course, focuses on improving students’ GMAT scores above 650. The course structure is similar to the live-online counterparts in both methods of instruction and learning resources (GMAT Interact).

The only difference is the curriculum, which is shorter (15 hours vs. 27 hours) but more advanced (focused on the most challenging questions and topics.)

Hence, if you have already enrolled in any other Manhattan Prep GMAT course, it is not worth paying another $1399 for another 15 hours of instruction and the same learning resources.

In my opinion, unless you are new to Manhattan Prep and aim for a perfect GMAT score, it may not be worth consideration, as you will pay $1399 for another 15 hours of instructions and the same learning resources.

The second program, Boot Camp, is for students who want intensive training that ready them for the GMAT in the fastest time possible.

Essentially, this program is the same as Complete Course, except that the hours of live instruction increase to 35, and all classes are crammed into a two-week time.

Regarding pricing, Boot Camp costs $2599, which is almost double that of Complete Course. You can add another $2500 to add 12 hours of live 1-on-1 tutoring to the program.

I believe both programs are not necessary or worth the money for most students, particularly Boot Camp.

If you plan to rush preparing for the GMAT in the fastest time, why don’t you take the self-paced program, which provides the same learning resources and slightly inferior learning experience? You will save almost $1500 (or even more if you choose other providers.)

Important Note: The big drawback for all Manhattan Prep GMAT courses is that the company does not offer a score improvement guarantee. In other words, they will not refund any course fees if you fail to score higher.

7. Kaplan GMAT Prep

Kaplan is a major test prep provider whose arsenal covers every standardized test in the United States. If you are looking for the best GMAT prep course, Kaplan is a solid contender that you may want to consider.

Like The Princeton Review and Manhattan Prep, Kaplan offers all three tiers of prep programs, self-paced, live online, and 1-on-1.

Self-Paced Program

Kaplan’s self-paced program provides the following learning resources:

On-demand video lessons– Created by GMAT experts, these prerecorded video lessons will teach you concepts, tips & tricks to approach each section of the GMAT exam, and various techniques that help you ace the most complex problems with ease.

GMAT Channel – The GMAT channel features archived lessons that every enrolled student can access. Instructors will review or even drill deep into minor topics that will potentially appear on the exam. Thus, these lessons will prove beneficial if you still need more clarification on particular topics.

In total, this program offers as many as 44 hours of instruction (on-demand + GMAT Channel.)

Adaptive Practice Questions and Tests – Kaplan is the GMAT course provider that probably offers the most practice questions and tests.

The QBank alone has 2300 practice questions, not to mention other nine full-length practice tests on the platform. Thus, you will never run out of GMAT questions to practice.

GMAT Prep Books – Kaplan will send its high-quality prep books to your address once you enroll in the program.

Official Test Day Experience – You can take a full-length GMAT practice test at the actual test center and under the same conditions as the real test. Thus, you can grasp what to expect on that big day and bring down stress and anxiety in the process.

Note: As of August 2021, I am unsure how this feature works outside the US and whether it is still available anywhere under the pandemic. It would be best to inquire with Kaplan’s support team about it before making purchasing decisions.

This self-paced course is reasonably priced at $599 for 6-month access.

Live Online and Tutoring

The live online option is not very distinct from the self-paced counterpart. It replaces prerecorded videos and archived episodes with live online instructions. This applies to both the core lessons and those on the GMAT channel.

Hence, you can also interact with the instructor and other classmates participating in the same lesson. All the classes are also fresher.

The live online course costs $1249. I think both options provide excellent value for money and are suitable for all students.

Finally, the tutoring program is the ultimate GMAT training that Kaplan has yet to offer. In essence, it will add hours of 1-on-1 tutoring to the Live Online Course.

Thus, you will get both live online instructions and a personalized tutor. The pricing starts at $2499 for 10 hours (or $250 per hour). However, if you purchase more hours, the cost per hour will be lower.

All Kaplan programs have a score improvement guarantee. Kaplan will refund 100% of your tuition if your score does not improve on the actual GMAT exam.

PLUS Add-ons

Kaplan also offers the PLUS add-on to both self-paced and live online programs. It will add more learning resources to the program. However, you will need to pay extra fees for it.

Regarding the self-paced program, the PLUS add-on, which costs an extra $200, would add the following to the program:

• 30 hours of elective live instruction on the GMAT channel – Kaplan does not provide much information about this learning resource. I am not so sure whether this instruction is different from those available on the live online program.

Suppose you don’t. Prep Scholar’s entire program (cost $259) is a better alternative, as it offers more in-depth lessons, practice questions (2500+), and valuable features to boost your Math score.

Veritas Prep is a test prep provider for several admission tests, such as GRE, GMAT, SAT, and ACT. Like many on this list, the Veritas Prep GMAT program consists of self-study, live online, and private tutoring options for the GMAT.

Self Study

Veritas Prep offers an excellent self-study GMAT prep program that enables students to set their schedules and learn anywhere, anytime.

Below is what you will get from the course.

Interactive Lessons – You will learn from top-notch instructors via prerecorded videos on the online platform. Each video is bite-sized (none is longer than 30 minutes.) Thus, it is easier for some to digest the content.

Adaptive Practice Questions and Tests – Veritas Prep offers 12 practice tests and other practice problems. In total, you will have as many as 5000 practice questions to learn by doing. All of these are also computer-adaptive, which is excellent for GMAT preparation.
