Software6 Best AI Grammar Checkers to Correct Mistakes For 2024

6 Best AI Grammar Checkers to Correct Mistakes For 2024

Grammar Checkers have been around for some time. I believe many students already have a chance to use them when writing papers for their English class.

Those tools mostly rely on fixed grammar rules to identify and correct mistakes. Thus, though they are decent in correcting syntax and spelling errors, they are very far from perfectly detecting advanced grammatical mistakes and enhancing writing quality.

Unsurprisingly, numerous writers will be frustrated to find mistakes in their writing even after using those tools.

Nevertheless, these tools have been improving every day. Their developers have equipped them with machine learning and AI technology, allowing them to find more grammatical errors and improve writing quality like never before.

Whether you are a student, teacher, content marketer, or basically everyone can use these powerful software products to write error-free articles, essays, theses, and many more.

Things You Should Know about AI Grammar Checkers

Although AI grammar checkers and chatbots are much more powerful than traditional ones, they are far from perfect.

At this point, I could not say any single AI grammar checker could detect and correct all grammar mistakes in my writing.

Based on my experience, AI grammar checkers work flawlessly in correcting blatant grammatical errors, but some of their corrections can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

Hence, you cannot blindly rely on them. A manual review is still necessary.

Alternatively, you may want to use two AI grammar checkers to check your writing, as I discovered that using two or more tools (even the free version) can help detect and correct more errors.

All tools on this list allow you to use its essential features for free. Consequently, I highly suggest you try them all before making decisions.

1. Trinka

Trinka is an AI writing assistant designed to correct mistakes in academic and technical writing.

In my opinion, this tool is most suitable for graduate or Ph.D. students, educators, scientists, and professionals in any field. Still, anyone can also use it to proofread and enhance the writing quality.

Trinka, one of the best AI grammar checkers
Trinka

Key Features

To use Trinka, you can copy and paste your document on the online platform. With this method, you will gain access to all the features that Trinka AI offers.

I think its user interface is excellent. It is fast and easy to use. Though there are some minor, annoying glitches, it is perfectly bearable.

Trinka Web Editor

Trinka’s platform is also equipped with full-fledged writing tools, which are more or less similar to Google Docs. I think you can even write your entire essay online. Moreover, Trinka will always save your work on the cloud, so there is no risk of losing your valuable work.

Alternatively, you can install Chrome Extension or Microsoft Word Plugin for Trinka to instantly correct your grammar errors on the platform you are writing on. However, if you need advanced features, you will need to use Trinka’s platform.

Grammar Checker – Trinka can correct more than 3,000 types of English grammar errors, ranging from subject-verb agreement, and word choice to punctuation errors.

Similar to other grammar checker tools, you can correct those errors in one click.

I found that checking quality is exceptional since Trinka eliminates almost all grammatical mistakes in my article. However, in my case, this AI English grammar checker struggles with correcting some sentence structures, so its corrections are still not optimal.

Trinka provides explanations for every correction, so you can grasp why you should change your sentence.

General or Academic Writing – You can choose between general and academic writing on the Trinka platform so that its recommendations are adjusted accordingly. To be specific, Trinka’s suggested corrections will be less strict than those on academic writing.

Unfortunately, I don’t think you can adjust the document type if you use the Chrome extension. The system will use academic writing as a default. Thus, if you want to edit your general writing documents, you have to copy and paste them on the Trinka platform.

Consistency Check – Trinka will monitor your usage of words. If inconsistent, Trinka will list all variants and allow you to resolve the issue with one click.

Personal Dictionary – Like other tools, you can add a specific word to the dictionary for Trinka to memorize, so it will not mark that word as misspelled.

Specific Corrections – As Trinka’s AI learned from the best-written writings, Trinka can suggest corrections relevant to your field, including medicine, engineering, economics, and social sciences.

In my opinion, this feature makes Trinka shine above other grammar checker software as your text will be appropriate and appear professionally written.

Publication Readiness Checks – This feature is unique to Trinka. The software can perform more than 20 checks to determine whether your document is ready for publication.

These checks include but not limited to

  • Ethical Compliance
  • Technical Compliance
  • Reference Details
  • Clinical Trial Information
  • Journal Scope Match

Thus, you can ensure that your document is on the right track without spending hours checking on your own.

Auto File Edit – This is an ultimate feature from Trinka that I have never seen in other tools. Trinka will completely auto-edit your document. Trinka claims that within minutes your document will be error-free.

I have tried this feature on my own. I first need to upload your document file (.doc) to the platform. Subsequently, Trinka will start working automatically.

Within a minute or two, my edited document will be ready for download.

The document appears properly edited. It also comes with a language score, track changes, and detailed comments. The latest is no different from what the writing advisor provides.

You can then handily accept changes on Microsoft Word, similar to when you work with a human editor.

Pricing

Trinka has straightforward pricing plans as follows.

  • Free
  • Premium (starting at $6.67 per month for an annual subscription)

Both plans provide access to all the features. However, the free plan is limited to 10000 word checks per month. Furthermore, you only get 2 monthly credits for using the auto file edit or publication readiness check feature.

In contrast, the Premium plan grants unlimited checks every month but still provides only 5 credits for auto file edits and publication readiness checks. Hence, it is crucial that you only use those credits in your finished drafts.

You can use the discount code ‘PUNADC21‘ to get a 20% discount on your subscriptions.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Best in correcting mistakes for academic writing, thus most suitable for writing academic English papers/theses/dissertations.
  • Clean user interface
  • Easy and free to use
  • Equipped with complete tools to write online
  • Detailed analysis of grammar errors
  • Specific corrections and publication readiness checks are game-changing.
  • Auto-editing helps simplify editing and accelerate the process.
  • Integrate well with Google Docs, WordPress, and any other browser-based platform

Cons

  • The free account has limited use of 10000 words per month.
  • Corrections are not 100% reliable. Trinka still struggles with several types of sentence structures.
  • As of June 2021, Trinka’s MS Word Plugin is not available for download.

2. Sapling

Unlike other tools in this list, Sapling is not an AI grammar checker in the true sense of the word. The tool functions as an AI messaging assistant that customer service teams can use to respond faster and more professionally to inquiries.

However, Sapling has an excellent built-in grammar checker that utilizes the power of deep learning and natural language processing. The goal is to use it to proofread workplace emails and send professional responses to clients.

I have used it and discovered that Sapling also works well in correcting grammatical errors in longer documents, so I decided to include Sapling in this post.

Sapling

Key Features

Using Sapling is straightforward. You need to install the extension to your browser, and you are all set.

Grammar Checker – Sapling will scan your document thoroughly. It will mark grammatical errors and provide suggestions to correct them. The tool also offers recommendations to improve writing quality, such as word choice.

According to Sapling, the software can catch more grammar errors than Grammarly (up to 60%.)

Sapling’s extension edits my article written on Surfer SEO.

Based on my experience, I am not sure this number is accurate. However, in my case, Sapling does spot more of my grammatical mistakes, especially embarrassing ones such as wrong verb tenses or misspelled words, than Grammarly.

Still, this does not mean that the tool is perfect. Sapling still fails to detect some errors. The tool also does not provide advanced suggestions regarding clarity and tone.

Hence, if you are looking for a writing assistant for your writing projects beyond online grammar checks, I don’t think Sapling is the best option.

In addition, Sapling does not provide explanations for corrections. I think this is acceptable only if you are a native speaker or understand English grammar well. Otherwise, other AI grammar checkers such as Linguix will suit you more.

Another drawback of this feature is that it takes some time (a minute or so) to completely scan the document, which is slightly longer than other tools.

Furthermore, if your document is long (i.e., 5,000+ words), Sapling’s extension can cause that tab to temporarily not responding. As a result, you need to wait 15-30 seconds on average.

Autocomplete – This feature is similar to Google Search’s Autocomplete. Sapling can predict the next words or phrases that you will type by utilizing deep learning technology and artificial intelligence. You can then one-click to add them to your sentence.

Although it does not work flawlessly if you use it in writing documents, it can help you write much faster.

Snippets – You can create snippets by adding phrases or even paragraphs, so you can use a shortcode when you need it, eliminating the need to write the whole thing once again.

Sapling also has other features. However, those are live chat-related and irrelevant to grammar checks, so I won’t include them in this post.

Pricing

Currently, Sapling has three pricing plans as follows:

  • Free
  • Pro – $25 per month
  • Enterprise – custom pricing

The free plan provides unlimited access to the grammar corrector. You can use it to correct English grammar mistakes as much as you want.

Nevertheless, the free tool will not provide premium suggestions (for advanced grammar errors) or access to the Autocomplete feature. If you want them, you will need to subscribe to the Pro plan.

Based on my experience, I think both are helpful but far from game-changing. If you want to use Sapling for grammar-checking purposes, it would be best to stick to the free plan.

You can try Sapling Pro for free for 30 days.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • One of the best free grammar checkers for the English language
  • Highly effective in searching for grammatical errors
  • Easy to use
  • Autocomplete to accelerate your writing speed

Cons

  • Not a full-fledged writing assistant (correct grammar mistakes only)
  • Editing a large document can render the browser tab unresponsive

3. Grammarly

Grammarly is unarguably the most popular online writing assistant. As a market leader, Grammarly is swift in adopting machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP) to its system so that everyone can write as articulately as professional writers as possible.

Grammarly, the most popular AI grammar checker

Key Features

Grammarly has developed immensely since I first used it in 2009. Because of the introduction of numerous features, this AI writing assistant now provides a comprehensive solution for automated document editing.

You can now use Grammarly in several ways. First, you can copy and paste your document on Grammarly’s web app. This method is optimal as you can use all of Grammarly’s features.

I found the web editor’s user interface to be clean. However, I don’t think I can write my whole essay here as it lacks writing tools.

Alternatively, you can download the Chrome extension and Microsoft Office plugin. This allows Grammarly to correct your grammatical errors in real time.

Below are the key features of Grammarly.

Writing AssistantGrammar goes far beyond being an online grammar checker. The tool provides a full suite to help improve writing quality.

To be specific, Grammarly can provide suggestions on writing style, word choice, tone, clarity, and many others.

As a non-native English writer, I have been using Grammarly Premium for years. The tool is astounding in enhancing every aspect of my writing, and that provides me with much more confidence in writing.

Unfortunately, I cannot say the tool is flawless. Grammarly sometimes fails to detect grammar errors, and their suggestions are not always correct. Thus, manual review is again necessary.

Consistency Check – Grammarly will check whether your usage of terms is consistent. If not, Grammarly can help you resolve the issue in one click.

Personal Dictionary – You can add any word to your personal dictionary so that Grammarly can memorize it, so it does not flag that word as misspelled again.

Set Goals – You can set goals for Grammarly to understand the nature of the document so that it can provide more accurate recommendations. For example, you can set the tone to be “respectful” when writing an email to your professor.

I like this feature as it can help me improve my document in any circumstances.

Plagiarism Checker – This advanced feature helps scan the document to ensure that it is original. I think it works modestly, though it is not as accurate as Copyscape.

Statistics – Grammarly collects various types of statistics. The most important of all is the document data, including the total score, readability score, word count, and vocabulary. This can be a modestly reliable metric for content quality.

In addition, Grammarly will send an email to your inbox every week. This email will show a summary of your data from the preceding week. This includes your error correction data, productivity compared to other Grammarly users, and other insights.

Pricing

As of June 2021, Grammarly has two pricing plans as follows:

  • Free
  • Premium – starting at $12 per month

The free plan only gains access to basic grammar and spelling checks but nothing else. Though it lacks advanced features, it is still an excellent free grammar checker tool that trumps other grammar websites such as Hemingway Editor or Reverso.

However, if you want to write worry-free, I highly suggest you subscribe to the Premium plan. It will provide many more editing recommendations that significantly improve writing quality.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Comprehensive Writing Assistant
  • Customizable recommendations
  • Easy to use
  • The plagiarism checker is a modest add-on.
  • Use handily with any browser-based platform or Microsoft Office

Cons

  • Expensive compared to other AI grammar checkers
  • Grammarly’s web app lacks writing tools

4. Linguix

Linguix is another exceptional AI-powered grammar and spell checker. Apart from grammar checking, the tool is equipped with several features that will help boost your writing skills and avoid repeating mistakes.

Linguix, AI Writing Assistant

Key Features

You can use Linguix by uploading your document on the website or installing the extension or MS Office plugin so that Linguix can edit your content on any platform.

Below is Linguix’s document editor on their website. You will need to copy and paste your writing on it for Linguix to start editing. Though it does not have any writing tools, the user interface is clean.

Writing Assistant – Like Grammarly and Trinka, Linguix provides a complete solution for writing assistance. The tool will correct all errors and provide insightful explanations.

Linguix’s explanations for errors are more detailed than any other writing assistant. Besides explaining the grammar, Linguix will provide tons of examples, including correct and incorrect sentence structures relevant to that grammar error.

Hence, you can learn from them and manage to avoid future mistakes.

Regarding quality, Linguix can mark grammatical errors at the same level as Grammarly. It can detect and automatically correct the majority of errors.

Audience Specification – You can specify your audience for Linguix to provide more appropriate recommendations. However, the degree of customization is lower than Grammarly. You can only select target readability, goal, and emotion.

Statistics – Like Grammarly, Linguix has provided insightful statistics for your document, including word count, reading time, and readability.

Snippets – You can create various snippets on your own to reduce the need to retype repetitive phrases or paragraphs every single time. Alternatively, Linguix already has ready-to-use templates so you can use them right away.

Pre-built Snippets

Education – Linguix offers several resources that help users learn English grammar, including grammar guides and interactive exercises that stimulate learning. I believe this feature is excellent for non-native speakers who are preparing for the TOEFL exam.

Pricing

As of 2021, Linguix has two pricing plans for retail customers to select from as follows:

  • Free
  • Premium – starting at $8 per month

The free plan can make basic corrections for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If you are looking for a comprehensive solution, it would be best to subscribe to the Premium plan.

With the Premium plan, you will gain access to all the features. There will be no limits whatsoever.

You can try the Premium plan for free for 7 days.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Easy-to-use platform with a clean user interface
  • Detailed explanations and intuitive examples for all corrections
  • Pre-built snippets to reduce repetitive tasks
  • Integrate well with any web-based platform and Microsoft Office
  • Good educational resources for users to improve their writing skills

Cons

  • The document editor has no writing tools.
  • Linguix’s corrections are not perfect. Sometimes it fails to detect grammatical errors.

5. ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid is another leader in the AI grammar checker industry. In my opinion, ProWritingAid is Grammarly’s most formidable rival.

Unsurprisingly, the tool is equipped with reliable features specializing in catching grammatical errors and providing excellent users’ suggestions.

ProwritingAid, an online grammar checker that utilizes the power of AI

Key Features

ProWritingAid is possibly the writing assistant with the most features at this point. The tool can technically help solve every problem related to English writing.

Like other AI grammar checkers, you can use ProWritingAid through the web editor, the extension, and the plugin. Thus, you have the flexibility to choose the platform you prefer.

Below is the web editor. You will need to copy and paste your document to it to start working. When I first used the tool, I was overwhelmed by its numerous features. Thus, I don’t think it is the easiest AI grammar checker to use.

Therefore, I prefer the Chrome extension, as it is much simplified and helps me correct any grammar errors in my article in real-time.

Real-time Writing Assistant – ProWritingAid’s AI will detect grammar errors in real-time and instantly provide suggestions for you to resolve them in one click.

All suggestions will be equipped with brief explanations so you can understand why you should implement them.

Furthermore, the tool will also check your writing for improvements. For example, the tool suggests deleting some phrases to improve readability.

Regarding the quality of suggestions, I think it is modest. ProWritingAid eliminates most of my errors and offers insightful and well-structured guidance to enhance content quality.

Writing Reports – Writing reports is a feature that makes me feel overwhelmed when I first used the tool. Later on, I found that it is not that complex, and it significantly assists me in writing better articles.

Using these reports is simple. Just click on the check you want and ProWritingAid will perform that check for you.

For instance, you can perform an overused check to check for overused words or phrases. Within seconds, ProWritingAid will report the data and suggestions you need to implement to resolve the issue.

In total, ProWritingAid can perform as many as 20 types of reports to evaluate your document.

This includes simple ones such as a style check or complicated ones such as sentence structure check that ProWritingAid will compare your work with officially published writing.

These reports may be overwhelming for some users to check them all. No worries! ProWritingAid can create a detailed summary report with excellent data visualization (charts, bars, etc.), so you can understand how to improve your document right away.

Writing Style and Document Type Customization – ProWritingAid is peerless in style and document type customization. You can choose from more than 9 writing styles and dozens of document types. Thus, you can ensure that the tool can edit any document you write.

Thesaurus and Word Explorer – Numerous writers have trouble finding the right words to fit in the context. ProWritingAid alleviates this pain by offering a comprehensive built-in word explorer and thesaurus.

Both features work differently but complement each other perfectly. Thesaurus will perform checks on your document and mark works that you should replace with a synonym.

This feature will also provide a list of words to choose from, so you can replace the marked work with one click. However, I found that not all suggested words are suitable for replacing. You should then use it with care.

On the other hand, Word Explorer aims to eliminate writer’s block. This feature supplies relevant information regarding specific words. This information includes thesaurus, alliteration, collocations, cliches, and many more.

Hence, with Word Explorer, you can find the right word or phrase that fits your document’s context with ease.

Plagiarism Checker – Like Grammarly, ProWritingAId can check whether your document is completely original.

Personal Dictionary – This feature is no different from Trinka and Grammarly. You can simply add any word to the dictionary to prevent the tool from flagging it as misspelled.

Pricing

ProWritingAid offers four pricing plans to choose from as follows.

  • Free
  • Monthly – $20 per month
  • Yearly – $79 per year or $6.58 per month
  • Lifetime – $399 one-time

The free plan will provide access to all essential features. However, if you perform some checks, those will be limited to the first 500 words of your text. You cannot use it infinitely like other AI grammar checkers, such as the free version of Grammarly.

Therefore, if you want to use ProWritingAid, a subscription is essential.

All paid ProWritingAid users have access to all features (except a plagiarism checker, see below.) There is no difference between each plan.

With regards to pricing, the monthly subscription is expensive. I suggest that you skip this option and subscribe to the yearly plan, as the latter is approximately 70% cheaper.

The lifetime plan is a convincing alternative for many. The price is equivalent to 5 years of the yearly plan. In other words, you will pay 5 years of subscription fees in advance.

In my opinion, I don’t think the lifetime plan is worth an investment. As AI and NLP technology advances, there will be many more AI-powered tools entering the market. Some could utilize newer technology and offer better editing recommendations than ProWritingAid.

I am also unsure whether its developers can maintain the quality of the software. Hence, it would be wise to stick with the yearly plan and reevaluate the tool every year.

If you want a plagiarism checker, you need to purchase the add-ons on top of your plans, which is $10 per year for a yearly plan, and $100 for a lifetime subscription.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Unarguably the most comprehensive AI grammar checking tool
  • Numerous checks that are beyond grammar analysis
  • Readable summary reports that analyze your content from a holistic perspective
  • Helpful features to eliminate writer’s block
  • Excellent data visualization
  • Fair Pricing (lifetime subscriptions are also available, though I don’t recommend it.)

Cons

  • Not the easiest tool to use
  • Based on my experience, if you use a low-spec computer, ProWritingAid’s web editor can run very slowly or even unresponsive.
  • The free plan has minimal usage.

6. InkforAll

InkforAll differs from any other tool on this list. In fact, it functions as an AI-powered SEO content optimization tool.

However, the tool has a built-in feature that provides excellent corrections of grammatical mistakes. I have used it for months and realize its effectiveness, so I don’t hesitate to include Inkforall on this list.

Key Features

Unlike other tools, InkforAll is not a browser-based tool. Hence, you need to download and install the software on your computer.

The next step is straightforward. After copying and pasting your document, just click on the top right of the platform. InkforAll will scan your document for grammar mistakes.

Within seconds, you can review the suggestions and implement them with one click. Each suggestion also comes with brief explanations, so you can perceive why you need to change it.

The drawback for InkforAll is that the tool only helps resolve grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Hence, it will provide much fewer and less complicated recommendations than other AI grammar checkers.

Extra Tips: As a content writer, I believe InkforAll is definitely one of the best platforms to write online. It is equipped with excellent writing tools that take all distractions from your writing. I even consider it much better than Google Docs.

Pricing

If you just use Inkforall as a writing platform and a grammar checker, you can use the tool for free for life. Inkforall only charges for SEO-related features, which most writers may not need.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Effortless to use
  • Excellent writing platform
  • Free grammar check software

Cons

  • Correct only grammar and spelling mistakes
  • Not a browser-based platform (requires downloading)

AI Grammar Checker for Businesses

Many businesses seek a tool to provide standardized responses that can convey brand voice and display their friendliness and professionalism to clients.

Unfortunately, not all AI grammar checkers on the above list manage to perform such tasks effectively. Therefore, it would be best to select one from the list below (some are enhanced versions of the above tools.)

ProWritingAid Business – ProWritingAid Business is an enhanced version of regular ProWritingAid. With this tool, you can create and automate your style guide and collaborate with your teammates with ease. The subscription starts at $16 per month for 2 users and $8 for each extra user seat.

Grammarly Business – Grammarly Business is an upgraded version of Grammarly. It is equipped with more features that allow you to create style guides and handily collaborate with your teammates. The pricing starts at $12.50 per user per month.

Linguix Team – Linguix Team is an improved version of Linguix Premium. With this plan, you will gain access to Linguix’s style guide and collaboration tools. The subscription starts at $10 per user per month.

Writer – Writer positions itself as an AI copyediting tool. Designed specifically for businesses, Writer excels in correcting grammar mistakes and creating style guides. The pricing starts at $11 per user per month.

Extra Tips for Content Writers

Content writers and copywriters who have used AI copywriting tools or AI content generators should always use these grammar-checking tools to proofread your content.

This is because those AIs usually generate texts with low coherence, which are not very readable. Their built-in automatic grammar correction is far inferior to Trinka, Grammarly, or ProWritingAid in correcting grammar errors and improving general writing quality.

Using the above tools would save time and help you create a much better piece of content.
